If Motherwell are to stay in the Premiership next season we now know that we've got to come through a play-off against Rangers, Queen of the South or Hibernian following relegated St Mirren's comeback win against us on Saturday.

Going into the final five or six-minutes it was looking as if we would take this into the final weekend but St Mirren came back to win two-one at St Mirren Park. Even if we had held on it wouldn't have made a difference as we wouldn't have caught Ross County or Kilmarnock in the end.

St Mirren had a great chance to take the lead when Kelly found himself unmarked from Mallan's freekick but he headed wide with Gow getting away and clear but with only our 'keeper Long to beat he put his effort wide.

Erwin was denied by St Mirren 'keeper Kello, he and McDonald both headed wide too and when Morgan, Sadlier and Dayton all threatened to breakthrough for St Mirren it looked like this could end in a goalless draw....

That was until Reilly was penalised for a foul on Erwin that gave us a chance from the penalty spot that Sutton (75), who had come off the bench, took and scored from to put us one-up to give our survival hopes fresh hope.

We couldn't hold this lead with Naismith (84), having come off O'Brien, beating Long to make it one-one less than 10-minutes later and then in the last minute McDonald saw red, controversially shown a red for violent conduct after a challenge with Reilly, which if an appeal isn't successful will see him miss our play-off.

Mallan (90+7) won it deep into injury-time when he fired home from 25-yards to give St Mirren the points and consign us to the relegation play-off game with our opponents to be confirmed soon enough with Hibernian finding out on Sunday if it'll be Rangers or Queen of the South.
